DAY 11 OF “TWELVETIDE” CATALOGUE HIGHLIGHTS

Christmas Eve. On this day 11 of “Twelvetide” we share a holiday highlight from our new 40th Anniversary catalogue .

#11

CHURCHILL & ROOSEVELT
TWO ORIGINAL WARTIME PROPAGANDA POSTERS

On Christmas Eve, 1941, Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt broadcast from the White House to millions worldwide at the 20th annual lighting of the White House Christmas tree. Extraordinarily, live film footage of this historic radio broadcast has surfaced and you can watch it HERE in its entirety.

We have two Churchill-Roosevelt themed World War II propaganda posters in our 40th Anniversary catalogue. One commemorates the first secret wartime meeting of the two in 1941 aboard the USS Augusta and the British battle cruiser HMS Prince of Wales off the coast of Newfoundland. A central outcome of this Atlantic Conference was the so-called “Atlantic Charter,” their blueprint for the world after World War II, which later formed the basis for the United Nations Charter. The full Atlantic Charter text is framed here with a vintage commemorative card featuring vivid caricatures of Churchill and Roosevelt.

The other poster is a rare wartime WPA original of Churchill and Roosevelt in bust-length, hand-drawn portraits beneath their respective national flags. An image of the Statue of Liberty appears with the headlines (above):  “United for Victory – Liberty for All,” and (below): “Democracy Shall Not Die. God Gave Us Courage. America Gave Us Strength.”

With these, we wish you, a very Merry Christmas.
