Andrew Roberts, author of one of the finest Churchill biographies yet written, and one of the finest Napoleon biographies yet written, has a new book out that is, by all accounts, one of the finest biographies of King George III yet written.
Clocking in at a modest 784 pages, THE LAST KING OF AMERICA: The Misunderstood Reign of George III is a major reassessment of the much ridiculed despot who, as history has long had it, squandered his American colonies and then went mad. Andrew Roberts has constructed a far more nuanced portrait that, in many ways, argues otherwise, deploying his unique gifts as a historian with access to documents newly digitized by the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle.
