Collector's Guide
The Postwar Speeches of Winston Churchill were published beginning in 1948 with The Sinews of Peace, which collected late-1945-1946 speeches, including Churchill’s historic Fulton, Missouri “Iron Curtain” speech. This was followed by Europe Unite in 1950 (1947-1948 speeches), In the Balance in 1951 (1949-1950 speeches), Stemming the Tide in 1953 (1951-1952 speeches), and The Unwritten Alliance in 1961 (1953-1959 speeches). The Unwritten Alliance appeared in England only and is thus the rarest of the postwar speech volumes.
Description
This is a very good set of First English editions in dust jackets with the following wear:
THE SINEWS OF PIECE jacket is edge-chipped, with fractional loss at the spine head and a hint of light foxing. The contents are fine, with a former-owner’s dated bookplate on the front free endpaper.
EUROPE UNITE jacket is price-clipped but quite well-preserved, save for fractional losses at the head and tail of the spine. The contents are fine, with some very faint spotting to the cloth.
IN THE BALANCE jacket is unclipped, with very nominal loss at the spine head and tail and some faint edge-toning to the rear flap. The contents are fine.
STEMMING THE TIDE jacket is significantly edgeworn with fractional losses, but intact and unclipped. The cloth is faded but the contents are fine.
THE UNWRITTEN ALLIANCE is virtually mint in a price-clipped dust jacket.
