Marlborough is Winston Churchill’s majestic biography of John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough; soldier, statesmen, hard-headed Churchillian ancestor. Initially published in England as a lush four-volume set and then as a somewhat less deluxe six-volume set in America, it was subsequently issued in an unabridged two-volume edition and a single-volume abridgment.
This is a very good First English edition set, in the very rare dust jackets, which are only modestly darkened with age and lightly shelfworn. The binding cloth is the variant bright purple produced, it has been suggested, for volumes shipped to the Australian market. This would seem to be confirmed by the presence of a small bookseller plate on the pastedowns of each volume for a Sydney, Australia bookseller, Angus & Robertson Ltd.
The critical Volume I dust jacket is not price-clipped, the balance are; neatly so. The gilt tops are bright and the contents are fine and virtually unfoxed (a light smattering along the fore-edges). Laid-into Volume IV is the original invoice from Angus & Robertson, addressed to a Justice of the High Court.
