Framed PRINT of Winston Churchill by “Pan”
First Reprint Edition
Frost & Reed
(20 x 23 1/2 inches)
Item Number: 208603
Painted in 1942 by Professor Arthur Pan, an eminent artist of Hungarian descent who came to Britain shortly before the war began, this superbly flattering likeness of Winston Churchill was issued in 1943 as a small, limited edition print (1,000 copies) produced by Frost and Reed to raise funds for Clementine Churchill’s “Aid to Russia Fund.” This is a subsequent reproduction of that print by Frost & Reed, enlarged (20 x 23 1/2 inches) rather sumptuously, and here gorgeously framed. (26 x 30 inches overall).
A colophon above the image on the upper border reads: “Published in 1943 by Frost & Reed Ltd. Fine Art Publishers, Bristol, Rudolph Fesch Fine Arts Inc., New York. Copyright in all countries including the U.S.A (Printed in England) & London, England.”
A calligraphic quoatation is printed beneath the image on the lower white border: ”We are all of us defending…a Cause, ….THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM AND OF JUSTICE; OF THE WEAK AGAINST THE STRONG; LAW AGAINST VIOLENCE; MERCY AND TOLERANCE AGAINST BRUTALITY AND IRON BOUND TYRANNY.” A reproduction of Churchill’s signature appears, followed by: ”December 5th 1942”
