This hand-colored original cartoon from Punch magazine, published August 12, 1953, was drawn by the legendary satirist Ronald Searle.

Captioned “Cross-Channel Marathon,” the sub-caption reads:

On such a full sea are we now afloat,

And we must take the current when it serves,

Or lose our ventures.
