Move #11
CHARTWELL
Winston Churchill was first shown Chartwell Manor in July 1921 — a derelict redbrick edifice of Elizabethan origin, with little charm but magnificent views overlooking the rolling Weald of Kent. Churchill instantly fell in love with Chartwell’s panoramic placement, but the asking price proved too steep. Five days after the birth of his daughter, Mary, in September 1922, Churchill made a new offer of £5,000 for the house and its eighty acres, without telling his wife, Clementine. On September 24, 1922, this offer was accepted. Churchill’s daughter Sarah later remembered her father driving the three eldest children from Sussex Square to look at Chartwell so they could tell him what they thought of the place — though he had, in fact, already secretly bought it.
Much more to come.
With our thanks and best wishes,
