HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHARTWELL BOOKSELLERS!

TODAY WE ARE 36.

By his 36th birthday, Winston Churchill had published eleven books, covered at least four colonial wars as a correspondent,  sat in Parliament for eleven years as both a Conservative and as a Liberal MP, served in the governments of two different Liberal Prime Ministers (Campbell-Bannerman and Asquith) and, following three years as President of the Board of Trade, had just been named First Lord of the Admiralty.

Our 36 years are a small accomplishment, by comparison, but achieved in service to one of history’s most accomplished men. And so we celebrate today our continued existence by association.

Chartwell Booksellers opened its doors on April 11, 1983 in the lobby of the Park Avenue Plaza building at 55 East 52nd Street in New York City. The lobby has changed but we are still here. Do come visit us soon.
