HAPPY 41ST BIRTHDAY TO US!

CHARTWELL BOOKSELLERS opened 41 years ago, April 11, 1983.

How are we celebrating? Well, we continue to adapt our 40th READINGS video series into Podcasts that you can listen to anywhere. New additions include actor Daniel Gerroll reading FRINGES OF POWER, the diaries of John Colville, Winston Churchill’s wartime private secretary.

We’ve also begun planning for Winston Churchill’s 150th Birthday anniversary in November. We hope to welcome everyone back to the store that month, unimpeded, with our endless lobby obstruction project at last wrapped up.

Stay tuned.

~NEW BOOK RECOMMENDATION OF THE MONTH~
TAKEOVER
Hitler’s Final Rise to Power

by Timothy W. Ryback

This exceptional work of scholarship lays out the rarely-told full story of how Hitler became Germany’s dictator. Not by violently seizing power, as is commonly thought, but with the covert backing and electoral assistance of various financial, industrial and political leaders, who tragically underestimated him.

An essential read as we approach this presidential election.

~PRECIOUS PRIZE OF THE MONTH~
CHURCHILL’S TAX REFUND

With Tax Day also approaching (followed, hopefully, by Tax Refund day), we share with you a rather extraordinary signed Churchill document, newly uncovered, in which Winston Churchill formally authorizes the Inspector of Taxes to pay his bankers on his behalf any “income tax Post-War credit to which he is entitled for the years 1944/1945 and 1945W/1946.”

The amount proved to be £65.

HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY WISHES TO ONE AND ALL!
