THE CROWN

The Golden Globes and Winston Churchill's Feminine Mystique

THE CROWN

Winston Churchill has now won a Golden Globe. A very odd thought indeed. His victory comes as a character in The Crown, the new Netflix television series about the ascension of young Queen Elizabeth II to the throne in the 1950s. The Crown was awarded a Golden Globe Sunday as television’s Best Dramatic series.

Watching CHURCHILL'S SECRET

A PBS Docudrama Reconnects Us To Churchill's Stroke Year

Watching CHURCHILL'S SECRET

This Sunday, September 11, PBS will broadcast Churchill’s Secret, an extremely well-produced Masterpiece docudrama that captures quite electrifyingly the stroke that felled Churchill in June 1953 and almost killed him. Michael Gambon, the great British thespian, inhabits Churchill honorably, and Lindsay Duncan conjures a luminous Clementine. Many of the exteriors were filmed at Chartwell itself.

We highly recommend that you tune in. The healing reverberations it gives to this solemn 9/11 commemorative Sunday feel just right.

A Cache of Newly Deacessioned Rarities

FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE N.Y. YACHT CLUB

"Brexit" (and Boris Johnson) we will save for another day (soon).

For the moment, let's keep the focus squarely on books.

Our friends at the New York Yacht Club library have deaccessioned a host of very interesting and venerable naval books from their collection.

We are proud to have them to share with you.

WITH WINSTON CHURCHILL AT THE FRONT

An Old Book, Long Out of Print, Happily Returns

WITH WINSTON CHURCHILL AT THE FRONT

100 years ago this past month (on May 7, 1916), Winston Churchill left the trenches on the Western Front and came home to England. He had fought there, on the front lines of the First World War, for roughly six months; an extraordinary display of courage, resiliency and recklessness, in the wake of his resignation as First Lord of the Admiralty following his scapegoating for the disaster at Gallipoli.

The best book ever written about this Churchillian escapade, long out of print but newly reissued, has landed here at Chartwell Booksellers just as we all are returning from our Memorial Day weekends. It is a most welcome reappearance.

TO OUR 33RD BIRTHDAY & TO CINDI DI MARZO

In Celebration and In Memory Of.

TO OUR 33RD BIRTHDAY & TO CINDI DI MARZO

April 11 is Chartwell Booksellers’ 33rd Birthday. We’re still here. So is Winston Churchill, at least literarily. His presence looms larger than ever. We’re very happy to have him around.

The arrival of our birthday month now sadly also signals the anniversary of our loss of Cindi Di Marzo, who passed away one year ago this coming April 25.

We miss her.

NOTHING HAS CHANGED

Blissfully Lulled as if at Lullenden

NOTHING HAS CHANGED

Safe in our original home, cozy (and not moved anywhere), our thoughts turn to Lullenden, Churchill’s beloved first country house (pre-Chartwell), which he bought 101 years ago this week.

Yes, it is good to be home.
